The window frame moves away from the siding or the door shifts against the brick. They move when the temperature changes, the wind blows, or the ground swells. Sometimes they move a little and sometimes they move a lot.

Most caulks can't take it. They dry hard and crack out. That's why you'll love Through The Roof!^™ It has powerful adhesion but stays elastic and rubbery. It will twist, bend, stretch over gaps up to 2" wide, or compress to absorb just about any movement a home can dish out.

Application
Brush-grade should be applied between 1/8" and 1/4" thick. Make sure it is worked well onto the surface so good contact is achieved. For the cartridge grade, a 1/4" bead is a minimum. (You need enough sealant mass to stretch and compress with roof movement.) Embed a seam sealing tape in Through The Roof!^™ for repairing large holes and cracks.

Tooling is the process of smoothing out the caulk bead to ensure good contact with the surface and a good appearance. �Float� lightly over the bead as pressing hard will remove too much sealant. A small putty knife with mineral spirits may be used to tool over the bead. We recommend a 10% soap solution to aid tooling if using your finger.

Clean-up
Tools may be cleaned with mineral spirits or paint thinner. We recommend cleaning hands with a citrus-based or waterless hand cleaner.

Should I use cartridge or brushable grade? Through The Roof!™ comes in cartridge and brushable grades. Brushable grade is thinner and can be spread more easily over a wide area. Example use: sealing over the top of flashing. Cartridge grade is able to fill a larger gap without slumping-especially in hot weather. Example use: caulking along the sides between a metal valley and cedar or cement shingles.

Sealing valleys Tile and shake roofs often have metal valleys. When hard rain hits, it can run into the valley from one side and splash up the other side going under the tiles or shakes. Apply Through The Roof!™ cartridge grade along each side of the valley. Make sure you use enough material to fill the gaps and get good contact between the metal valley and roof material. Clear Through The Roof!™ leaves an attractive seal on metal and shake roofs.

How to make a shingle patch invisible. Trim the hole in the shingle to a uniform size. From a spare shingle, cut a repair piece that will fit into the uniform hole. Tool or brush Through The Roof!™ into the hole. Fit the repair piece making sure it has good contact with the sealant. Brush another coat over the top of the patch overlapping at least 1" onto the repaired shingle. If you do not have a spare shingle, simply brush Through The Roof!™ into the hole and overlap the shingle at least 1". Assuming there is additional roofing material under the hole, you do not need to use extra patching material. Note: Through The Roof!™ may become discolored when applied over some asphalt shingles or patching compounds. This does not affect its performance.

Reduce ice dams with under-the-roof-deck sealing Warm air that leaks out of your roof around vents, etc., is called a �warm-air bypass.� This melts snow which runs down and re-freezes on the eave, causing a roof-damaging ice dam. The best way to prevent these is to seal penetrations from the attic side, but watch those roofing nails! If the gap is 1/2" or larger, put foam backer rod in the cavity and caulk over it. Backer rod gives a solid surface to put Through The Roof!™ against and saves on material.

Seal air conditioners and skylights Seal between ductwork and air conditioning units as well as the flashing around ductwork. For skylights, Through The Roof!™ can be used to seal between frame and plastic as well as between the roof and the frame.

Sealing gutters and downspouts Cartridge grade is best to seal end caps and joint seams prior to assembly. Brush grade is used for coating over leaks in existing gutters. For best results, dry off repair area. Make sure to clean rusted areas thoroughly and brush Through The Roof!™ in a large enough area to overlap onto non-rusted metal. If holes are large, use a mesh-type seam tape putting it on in sandwich fashion: sealant undercoat - cloth - sealant topcoat.

Sealing chimney and other flashing Use brushable grade and overlap the steps of the flashing as well as the brick. Through The Roof!™ can be used to seal over cracks in mortar, which can be a leak source. Loose mortar should be replaced. The end result is a much more attractive roof than using black asphalt roof sealants.

Repair white roof coatings Through The Roof!™ can be used to repair cracks and small holes in white water-based roof coatings - either to add life or to prepare the surface for an additional application of roof coating. Allow Through The Roof!™ to dry 24 hours before putting on additional roof coating. Unlike asphalt patching compounds, Through The Roof!™ won�t bleed through coatings applied over it - because it is clear.

Fix a broken tile
Use Through The Roof!^™ to repair cracks and breaks. Apply liberally to the broken edges and join. Spread squeeze out material at least 1� on either side of crack to assure a good seal. Front edges of flat tile may be glued down with Through The Roof!^™.

The 2 types of roof leaks
Roof Penetrations: The most common leak is around a pipe, vent, skylight, cable, chimney, parapet wall or anything that penetrates through your roof deck.
Roof Material: Cracks, splits and holes can form in aging roof materials. If small areas of your roofing have become brittle, water can seep through tiny cracks, which may not look like a leak source.
NOTE: Too much deterioration can mean you need to replace your roofing material. Through The Roof!^™ is not meant as a roof replacement.

How do I find the source of the leak?
Here are a few tips:
• Start by looking directly above the inside leak. Inspect pipes, vents and cables - anything which was installed by cutting a hole in your roof. Also check metal flashing around chimneys, dormers and parapet walls. Look for signs of pulling away, turned up roofing edges, cracked roof cement, rusted metal, loose and cracked mortar.
• Next, try tracing water from the inside. Leaks are not always directly above the leak inside because water can run between layers of roofing material and along pipes, etc. Look under your roof for a water path along ducts, pipes, beams and electric wires to trace it to where it comes through your roof.
